Karen Smith has more than 25 years of experience providing audit, tax, and management advisory services to various types of real estate entities and not-for-profit organizations. She specializes in affordable housing and has a national practice serving clients that include developers, investors, for-profit and not-for-profit owners, management companies, and mortgage companies.
At CohnReznick, Karen is responsible for all aspects of audit and management advisory service engagements including planning and coordination with the client’s finance and management personnel. She has extensive technical and practical knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Generally Accepted Auditing Standards, Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards, and the Consolidated Audit Guide for Audits of HUD Programs. In addition to financial statement audits, Karen regularly prepares low-income housing tax credit cost certifications. She is a frequent speaker on accounting and auditing principles and has taught courses for the Rural Housing Service on financial analysis and for the University of Maryland on military housing development and asset management.
