Patrick J. O'Keefe Discusses August Jobs Report in Media

9/6/13

by Patrick J. O'Keefe, Director of Economic Research

On Friday, September 6, the U.S. Department of Labor announced that the economy added 160,000 jobs, bringing the unemployment rate to 7.3% from 7.4%.

Patrick J. O’Keefe, CohnReznick's Director of Economic Research, is speaking to several media outlets about the report.

On CNBC Worldwide Exchange, Pat said that recent U.S. data is not good enough for the Fed to start tapering. He added, “The Fed will look at the job change number. What I think they really should be looking at is whether the employment rate…is increasing because that’s the real test of whether we’re really making progress in the recovery.”

Pat spoke with The Fiscal Times prior to the report’s release, saying that this month's report will "exceed the usual hype." This is the last jobs report before Federal Reserve officials meet to decide on their major economic stimulus push.

In The Wall Street Journal, he predicted that all told, federal, state and local governments will add 10,000 jobs in August. That isn’t “a lot of progress,” he said, “but it just signals that the public sector is moving from being a drag on the labor market.”

Pat also discussed his expectations with The Wall Street Journal This Morning radio. "This remains a gradual, sometimes grudging, jobs recovery."

He will also be reacting to the report with other media outlets, including Bloomberg Radio's The Hays Advantage.
