J.H. Cohn LLP Named a Best Accounting Firm for Women


J.H. Cohn LLP, one of the leading accounting and consulting firms in the United States with offices in New York, California, Connecticut, and throughout New Jersey, was named one of the "Best Accounting Firms for Women" by the American Society of Women Accountants ("ASWA") and the American Woman's Society of Certified Public Accountants ("AWSCPA").

The ten Best Firms were selected from the firms that participated in the 2011 Accounting MOVE Project, sponsored by the ASWA and AWSCPA. Firms were ranked on the range, depth, and success of programs and workplace culture proven to remove barriers to women's success, especially at midlevel and above. The MOVE methodology pivots on four factors-money, opportunity, vital supports for work/life, and entrepreneurship-known to advance women in the workplace.

J.H. Cohn stood out for its Professional Women's Program and work-life programs. With women making up a robust 58 percent of J.H. Cohn managers, the Firms' female leadership pipeline is rapidly filling and the J.H. Cohn programs introduced in the past five years keep women engaged and help prepare them to be tomorrow's business leaders. In addition, J.H. Cohn provides best-in-class tech support for flexworking so that alternative career paths are not detours.

Since its introduction in 2005, the J.H. Cohn Professional Women's Program's mission has always been to help recruit, retain, and advance female professionals, and since the start, women have benefited from learning and development opportunities and other resources. Today, the Program's second phase focuses on customizing offerings based on the localized needs of women in offices Firm-wide and placing an increased emphasis on business development. The Program-combined with other J.H. Cohn initiatives, including a dedicated Learning and Development Department and mentoring-enable staff by making requisite tools, training, and support available. J.H. Cohn also realizes that as more women make up the core demographic of its client base, it is increasingly important to have qualified women represented on our teams.

Through the 2011 Accounting MOVE Project and its sponsoring associations, the American Society of Women Accountants and the American Woman's Society of Certified Public Accountants, the profession can consistently measure the status of women and collaborate on proven and promising practices that advance and retain women.

Key findings:

  • Millennials expect women to be business leaders, and view flexwork and fair pay as family economic issues.
  • Women are pulling in new clients, even as they accelerate in the partnership pipeline, through innovative business development programs.
  • Pay equity must be validated by audits and reviews to validate women's trust in firm leadership.
  • Firms that publicly communicate the results of their diversity programs -- not just their activities -- rapidly gain authority with clients, employees, and potential recruits.
