California extends filing deadline for taxpayers impacted by winter storms

Image

California’s Governor, Gavin Newsom, extends the California income tax deadlines to file individual and business income tax returns and payments to Oct. 16, 2023, for taxpayers affected by the December and January winter storms.

The extension applies to taxpayers impacted by severe winter storms, flooding, landslides, and mudslides in specific counties. It is intended to align state due dates with the extended due dates announced by the IRS (Opens a new window). According to Governor Newsom’s announcement (Opens a new window) to extend deadlines, the relief applies to residents and businesses in the following counties:

The extended deadline applies to original deadlines occurring on or after Jan. 8, 2023, and prior to Oct. 16, 2023. For calendar basis taxpayers, this time includes:

  • Individual tax returns typically due April 18, 2023
  • Estimated tax payments typically due Jan. 17, April 18, June 15, and Sept. 15, 2023
  • Business tax returns typically due March 15 or April 18
  • PTE elective tax payments typically due June 15, 2023

What does CohnReznick think?

California taxpayers located in the applicable counties should consider availing themselves of the relief being provided by the state to extend the due date of returns and payments.
