Roy Bernardi Joins CohnReznick's Government Division as a Senior Advisor

December 6, 2012 – New York, NY – CohnReznick Government, a division of CohnReznick LLP, the 11th largest accounting, tax, and advisory firm in the United States, has announced Roy Bernardi has joined the Firm as a Senior Advisor. Based on his extensive experience in local, state, and federal governments, Bernardi will assume an advisory role assisting CohnReznick Government’s business expansion strategy.

In his roles as Deputy Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Assistant Secretary of Community Planning and Development, and Mayor of the City of Syracuse, NY, Bernardi proved his ability to work with all levels of government to make the best use of taxpayer funds and improve government initiatives.

"Roy Bernardi’s commitment to protecting taxpayer dollars and supporting government efficiencies mirrors the approach we take with our clients," said Paul Raffensperger, Principal, CohnReznick Advisory Group – Government Services National Director. "He will help us continue our work of preventing and detecting fraud, waste, and abuse of government funds."

Bernardi said, "Working with the CohnReznick Government team allows me to offer guidance and knowledge of the public sector to a firm already entrenched in government programs. I am looking forward to this exciting collaboration opportunity."

Using his expertise with HUD and his knowledge of state government, specifically in the Northeast region, Bernardi will start his new position with CohnReznick Government by guiding the firm’s recovery efforts in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Recognizing the mental toll the grant application process can have on impacted survivors of disasters such as Hurricane Sandy, Bernardi will work with CohnReznick Government’s experienced project managers to ensure the recovery process can be smooth and stress-free for survivors.

Bernardi began his government career with a 19-year stint as Auditor of the City of Syracuse, NY, during which time he conducted audits within the agencies, bureaus, and boards of the city government. In January 1994, Bernardi became the 51st Mayor of the City of Syracuse. As Mayor, Bernardi is credited for significant annual budget savings, bringing the number of violent crimes to their lowest levels in the 1990s, and targeting slum landlords. He was the first Mayor in the Northeast to merge a large city police department with those of suburban small villages.

In 2001, Bernardi was appointed by President Bush and confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the Assistant Secretary of Community Planning and Development. During the next three years, Bernardi facilitated partnerships with local and state governments, the private sector, and nonprofit organizations to create decent housing, suitable livings conditions, and economic opportunities for low- and moderate-income citizens.

In 2004, Bernardi was nominated and confirmed as the HUD Deputy Secretary. Under his management, two HUD programs were removed from the Government Accountability Office’s high-risk watch list and $2 billion in fraudulent payments were eliminated from the rental assistance housing program. HUD also worked with several federal agencies to end homelessness through employment and housing opportunities.

In addition to his roles in public service, Bernardi is an affiliate Professor at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA and an adjunct Professor in the Graduate School of Continuing Studies at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
