Patrick J. O'Keefe Discusses February Jobs Report in the Media

3/7/14

On March 7, the Department of Labor announced that the U.S. economy added 175,000 jobs in February. The unemployment rate was 6.7%, compared to 6.6% in January.

Patrick J. O’Keefe, CohnReznick’s Director of Economic Research, joined CNBC Worldwide Exchange prior to the release of the report to discuss his expectations. Pat noted, “When you look at what’s going on underneath the weather, there is clearly some evidence that the economy’s growth rate is decelerating.”

While the economy has gained back 90 percent of the jobs lost during the recession, on Wall Street Journal This Morning radio in advance of the report’s release, Pat points out, “We’re still not to the peak we had in January 2008…Secondly…our potential number of employees has increased sizably.”

In USA Today, Pat shared what factors he believed contributed to the soft employment gains in December and January.

Pat joined Kathleen Hays on Bloomberg Radio's The Hay's Advantage to react to the report. "My initial reaction was that jobs growth was limping a little bit faster in February," he said. "This is a better report I think in a lot of ways than many anticipated becase of this recurring weather theme." Pat also added that "overall its another month of mediocre growth."

Pat is speaking to various media outlets throughout the day, including Reuters and the Associated Press.
