Patrick J. O’Keefe Discusses June 2012 Employment Report in Media

On Friday, July 6, the U.S. Department of Labor released data on national employment conditions during June 2012. Employers added 80,000 jobs and the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 8.2 percent.

Patrick O'Keefe, director of economic research at J.H. Cohn, is speaking to several media outlets about the report, including The Wall Street Journal, Crain's New York, Wall Street Journal Radio, Bloomberg Radio's Hays Advantage, and New York's WCBS Radio.

In the Wall Street Journal article, "Weak Labor Report Fans Fears," Pat said: "We had confirmation of what all of the other economic indicators have been signaling for some time, and that is a marked deceleration of the U.S. economy. This is not an outlier month. We've seen a deceleration in job growthsince the beginning of the year."

On WCBS Radio, Pat said, "Not a lot of stark bad news, but the absence of good news is overwhelming." He also points out that the single largest contributor to the overall improvement was in the temporary healthcare sector. He says it "is an indication that when employers need help, they are still not convinced about the sustainability of the recovery."

In advance of the release of the jobs report, Pat spoke to "Wall Street Journal This Morning." On this radio program, he said, "The underlying conditions that have been a constraint on the growth of the economy are not susceptible to quick fixes."
