November: Another Great Month for Food and Beverage Sales After October’s All-Time High

Although a new Harris Poll may have indicated that consumers are planning to cut back on restaurant spending this holiday season, recent economic data shows otherwise: November's total food and beverage sales (seasonally adjusted) were $41.9 billion, up 6.1% from November 2010.
The numbers are down just marginally (0.3%) from October's all-time record, proving once again that the hospitality industry, which is often among the first industries to be impacted by economic downturns, is once again among the first to begin its recovery.

The hospitality industry hit its own recessionary bottom in October 2009 but recovery began to gain traction just four months later, in February 2010. Since then, sales have increased in 18 of the past 22 months. And while employment in the industry is slightly (0.5%) below the pre-recession peak, its recovery is far more complete than the economy as a whole, which sits 4.5% below its pre-recession high.
