J.H. Cohn Foundation Donates $150,000 to Cohn for Kids Charities / Celebrates 20th Annual Charity Golf Invitational

J.H. Cohn LLP, one of the leading accounting and consulting firms in the United States, through its J.H. Cohn Foundation, donated a total of $150,000 to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation ("SOWF") and the Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation, two Cohn for Kids-supported charities at its 20th Annual Charity Golf Invitational yesterday.

Longtime J.H. Cohn Charity Golf Invitational supporter Capital One Bank was the presenting sponsor of the outing, which hosted nearly 100 golfers and dozens of special guests at Hollywood Golf Club in Deal, NJ on June 13, 2011.

Through the J.H. Cohn Foundation, Cohn for Kids supports children in need, from young children to college students. SOWF provides college scholarship grants, financial aid, and educational counseling to the children of Special Operations personnel who were killed in an operational mission or training accident. The Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation is devoted to ending the cycle of domestic violence and loss of life through two Foundation initiatives, Margaret's Place and Community Players.

At the awards ceremony, John T. Carney, Jr., Colonel, USAF, Retired, and president/CEO, SOWF; Edie Rosenthal, public relations director, SOWF; Judith Ann Lynn, executive director, Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation; and Jennifer Coppola, development officer, Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation, accepted the donations. The checks were presented by Thomas J. Marino, CPA, partner and CEO, J.H. Cohn, and Michael L. Cohen, CPA, office managing partner-Roseland, J.H. Cohn and director of the J.H. Cohn Foundation.

Special guests included Heather Harris, daughter of 1st Sgt. Glenn Harris, 75th Army Ranger Battalion, who was killed in a training accident in 1994. SOWF supported the college educations of Heather and her sister, Tara. Craig F. Brotchie, Colonel, USAF, Retired, who spent 26 years in the United States Air Force primarily in the Joint Special Operations arena, also attended. His wife is General Ann E. Dunwoody, Commanding General of the U.S. Army Material Command at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. She is the first woman in U.S. history to be selected to serve as a Four Four Star General.

"It is rewarding to witness how our golf invitational has grown over the past 20 years and to see the impact our support has made on these worthwhile organizations," says Cohen. "Hearing directly from individuals who have benefited, like Heather Harris, adds a personal connection and makes us even more proud to support the work that SOWF and the Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation do for children and young adults."

Steve Adubato, Emmy Award-winning THIRTEEN (PBS) anchor, media analyst, and Star-Ledger columnist, was the evening's master of ceremonies and conducted an exciting live auction during the evening ceremonies.

Each year, J.H. Cohn distinguishes its event with unique experiences throughout the day for its guests. This year featured a $10,000 shoot-out with a guaranteed winner, nine closest-to-the pin prizes, team prizes, a silent auction featuring more than 30 items, and a live auction with such packages as a twosome at the Joe Torre Safe At Home Celebrity Golf Classic, an opportunity to be "photographer for the day" at the NY Mets, and a Napa Valley and San Francisco vacation package.

For the past five years, J.H. Cohn has raised a combined total of more than $850,000 for these two organizations. The donations have helped support scholarships through SOWF and programs run by Safe At Home. For more information on these organizations, visit www.specialops.org and www.joetorre.org.
