IRS expands Identity Protection (IP) PIN Opt-In Program to all eligible taxpayers
The IRS recently announced that it is expanding the Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) Opt-In Program in January 2021 to any taxpayer that can properly verify their identity.
Taxpayers that want added protection from identity theft can apply for an IP PIN, a six-digit number that they use on their tax returns to help prevent fraudulent tax return filings. Taxpayers with either a valid Social Security Number or Individual Tax Identification Number are eligible to apply.
Starting in January 2021, taxpayers will be able to apply for an IP PIN online at IRS.gov/ippin. Once a taxpayer passes the authentication process, this new tool on the IRS website will immediately display the taxpayer’s IP PIN. Taxpayers can also file Form 15227 or visit a Taxpayer Assistance Center to apply for an IP PIN, but using the IRS website is by far the fastest way to receive one.
Each IP PIN is valid for one year, after which taxpayers must apply for a new number. Taxpayers should not share their IP PIN with anyone except their tax advisors.
