CohnReznick Elevates Nine Professionals to Partner/Principal

Kevin Beattie, CPA, is a partner in CohnReznick’s Baltimore office with over 15 years of experience providing tax consulting and compliance services to clients in industries that include real estate, technology, and life sciences. As a member of the Firm’s Affordable Housing, Technology and New Media, and Life Sciences Industry practices, Beattie has a diverse background in partnership and corporate taxation as well as federal and state tax credit programs. His experience includes providing advisory and tax planning services to small and middle-market companies with a client base that includes Community Development Entities, tax credit syndicators, developers, investors, and early and later-stage technology companies. Beattie holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Loyola University, Maryland, and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants.
Emily Butler, CPA, is a partner in CohnReznick’s Bethesda office and a member of the Firm’s Assurance Practice. She has more than 13 years of public accounting experience in the areas of audit, reviews and compilations, and other relevant accounting services. Her client service experience includes working with real estate funds, real estate developers, not-for-profit organizations, and owners and operators of real estate assets such as hotels, office, flex, industrial, multifamily, single family, land and condos. Her knowledge extends to the requirements of investment funds and with Investment Company Guide – Fair Value, GAAP cost basis, and income tax basis reporting. In addition to client responsibilities, Butler has led firm-sponsored recruitment discussions and presentations and instructed continuing education courses for client and professional staff covering topics such as not-for-profit organizations, basic real estate concepts, and audit methodology. Butler holds of Bachelor of Science, Accounting, from West Virginia University and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Commercial Real Estate Women, Washington DC chapter.
Alison Galer, JD, is a principal at CohnReznick and serves as the Firm’s Deputy General Counsel. Based in the Roseland office, Galer joined CohnReznick after spending more than two decades in private practice as a commercial litigator focusing on the various legal needs and litigation defense of accounting firms and financial institutions. Before joining CohnReznick, she was the Managing Partner of a Top 20 New Jersey-based regional law firm. Galer received a Doctor of Law, cum laude, from Seton Hall University and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Pittsburgh. She is a member of the New Jersey Bar.
Timothy Garland, CPA, is a partner at CohnReznick and a member of the Technology and New Media and Manufacturing and Distribution Industry practices. Based in the New York office, he is also a member of the Public Company Audit Practice and Employee Benefit Plan Audit Practice. Garland has more than a decade of experience providing assurance and financial reporting services to clients ranging from start-up to large multinational companies. With diverse industry experience, he provides services to both public and private companies based in the U.S. as well as those with international operations. He works closely with business owners and management teams seeking guidance on complex accounting issues including revenue recognition, debt and equity offerings, mergers and acquisitions, and stock based compensation. Garland received a Bachelor of Science, Accounting, from Montclair State University and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants.
Brian Marconi, CPA, is a partner in CohnReznick’s Bethesda office and a member of the Renewable Energy Industry Practice. Having specialized in the renewable energy industry for the past 10 years, Marconi serves closely-held and publicly-traded clients. He has led the audit of various renewable energy developers, infrastructure funds, tax equity investment funds, and engineering, procurement, and construction contractors. He has also provided accounting consulting services to renewable energy companies, assisting them with developing accounting policies and writing technical accounting positions on various topics impacting the renewable energy industry. He has led audits of companies reporting under both U.S. GAAP and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and has completed numerous cost certification examinations of eligible basis of Investment Tax Credits under IRC Section 48. Marconi holds a Bachelor of Science, Accounting, from the University of Delaware and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants.
Joy Matak, JD, LLM, is a principal at CohnReznick and Co-Leader of the Firm’s Trusts and Estates Practice. Based in the Roseland office, she has more than 20 years of diversified experience as a wealth transfer strategist with an extensive background in providing tax services to multi-generational wealth families, owners of closely-held businesses, and high-net-worth individuals and their trusts and estates. Matak provides clients with wealth transfer strategy planning to accomplish estate planning and business succession goals. She also performs tax compliance, including gift tax, estate tax, and income tax returns for trusts and estates, and consulting services related to generation skipping including transfer tax planning, asset protection, life insurance structuring, and post-mortem planning. She has authored or co-authored articles for publications that include Tax Management Estates, Gifts and Trusts (BNA) Journal; Leimberg Information Services, Inc. (LISI); and Estate Planning Review (The CCH Journal). Matak recently co-authored a book on the new tax reform law entitled Estate Planning: Estate, Tax and Other Planning after the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. She received a Master of Laws, Taxation, with distinction, from Georgetown University Law Center, a Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Vermont Law School, and a Bachelor of Science, Mathematics, cum laude, from Seton Hall University. She is a member of the Estate Planning Council of Northern New Jersey and the New Jersey State Bar Association.
Wesley Prato, CPA, is a partner in CohnReznick’s Commercial Real Estate Industry Practice. Based in the Chicago office, he has 12 years of experience in public accounting, providing client services in the areas of audit, review, and other financial reporting needs. This experience includes working with developers and private equity investors of companies in the commercial real estate, affordable housing, and hospitality industries, among others. Prato serves developments benefitting from the historic tax credit and Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) programs and is responsible for planning the engagements, supervising staff, and coordinating all fieldwork. Other responsibilities on these engagements include determining audit scope, selecting procedures to be applied, establishing budgets, reviewing work papers, identifying audit issues, communicating with clients, and preparing financial statements or reports. Prato regularly participates in commercial real estate and hospitality industry focused panels and roundtables and has participated nationally within the Firm in developing audit programs and techniques specifically tailored to auditing commercial real estate entities. Prato received a Bachelor of Science, Accounting, from Northern Illinois University and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Illinois Certified Public Accountants Society, and the Urban Land Institute.
John Van Stee, CPA, CFE, is a partner in CohnReznick’s Chicago office and a member of the Firm’s Assurance Practice. He has more than 20 years of public accounting experience in providing audit, accounting, and tax services to clients that include affordable housing and assisted living developers and management companies, affordable housing syndicators, and not-for-profits. Van Stee has extensive knowledge of the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC), Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) programs. His strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and generally accepted auditing standards (GAAS) enables him to consistently provide outstanding accounting and auditing services to his clients. He works closely with his audit teams to lead and complete a detailed review of their performance and to assure that their time on the engagement is used efficiently. Van Stee received a Bachelor of Science, Accounting, from Calvin College is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, Illinois CPA Society, Illinois Housing Council, and Affordable Assisted Living Coalition.
Naseem Wenzel is a partner in CohnReznick’s Chicago office and serves the Commercial Real Estate Advisory practice. Leveraging a deep understanding of the industry and its functions with more than 20 years of experience, she has a proven track record of providing world-class service to Investment Management and Private Equity firms focusing on business transformation and strategy. Wenzel works with many of the leading global and national real estate owners and operators and has core competencies in strategic and business planning, process reengineering, business intelligence, data governance, enterprise architecture specific to real estate, and business architecture. She is a process improvement expert. Before joining CohnReznick, Wenzel worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers, served as Vice President of Solutions and Integrations at Brookfield Asset Management, and was a Project Manager at Urban Retail Properties. Wenzel received a Master of Science, Accountancy, from DePaul University and a Bachelor of Arts, Economics, from the University of British Columbia.
