Connecticut Taxpayers Can Contest Recent Property Tax Assessments

Real property owners and renters in Connecticut may have the opportunity to challenge their property tax assessments if they act by February 20, 2014.

Every five years, Connecticut municipalities are required to revalue real estate in their jurisdictions to its current market value. The municipalities then use this market value to determine the annual property tax due on the real estate for the next five years. The following Connecticut municipalities have completed their five-year revaluations:

  • Avon
  • Guilford
  • Old Saybrook
  • Barkhamsted
  • Hampton
  • Rocky Hill
  • Bethany
  • Harwinton
  • Scotland
  • Bethlehem
  • Kent
  • Sharon
  • Bolton

  • Bridgeport
  • Lebanon

Any taxpayer responsible for paying property tax in one of the above-listed communities should review their notices of proposed assessment to ensure they agree with the valuation.

If the taxpayer disagrees with the assigned valuation, the taxpayer must contest the valuation within a specified period of time. In Connecticut, the deadline for contesting a property valuation to the local board of assessment appeals is February 20, 2014.

What Does CohnReznick Think?
Taxpayers owning Connecticut real estate should review their notice of proposed assessment to determine whether their property is properly valued and should timely contest such assessment where appropriate.
